Evelyn G. Bartling, the second oldest daughter, was born March 11, 1931 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa to Richard and Catherine (Reelfs) Dirks and she died March 6, 2010 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, South Dakota at the age of 78 years.
Evie was baptized and confirmed in the St. John American Lutheran Church in Le Mars. She attended Le Mars Central High School and graduated with the class of 1949. She rode the bus and attended the Lutheran School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa and graduated with the class of 1952. She and her friend Ruth moved Burke, South Dakota in 1953 and she worked for the Burke Community Hospital for many years. She worked at Rosebud Country Care Center and the Winner Nursing Home, retiring in 1997.
Evie was united in marriage to Alvin Bartling in Burke on November 5, 1954 and to this union four children were born. She loved watching her grandchildren grow, her flowers, family gatherings, good friends and she enjoyed playing cards and winning. Alvin and Evie celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2004.
Evie was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Lois; her brother Donald; sisters-in-law: Helen Bartling, June Bartling, Amanda Quinney-McCoy, Marie LaDouceur-Sprenger, Marie Bartling, Irma Bartling, Joan Bartling, and Alice Dirks; her brothers-in-law: Fred, Henry, Martin, Julius, Lloyd, Herman, Patrick, Mel, Ed and Don; and her niece Laurie Speichinger.
Evie is survived by her husband Alvin; daughters: Catherine and Gayle; sons: Richard (Janelle) and Dale; grandchildren: Meredith Benter, William Nelson, Kyle Nelson, Sara Nelson, Benjamin Bartling, Brecken Bartling and Bryce Bartling; her great-granddaughter, Veronica Claussen; her sisters: Marli Huisman and Dori (Ron) Ohlendorf and her brothers-in-law: Gerhardt Bartling and Arnie Speichinger.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 10:30 AM at the Grace Lutheran Church in Burke. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Burke. There will be a prayer service on Tuesday at 7 PM at the church. Visitation will be one hour prior to both of the services at the church.
