Elvera Lorraine Bauld was born July 12, 1921 to George F. and Lydia (Schlaht) Bentz at Fairfax, South Dakota. She grew up in the Fairfax area and attended school there. When she was entering her senior year, the family relocated to Burke. She attended and graduated from Burke High School in 1940.
Following graduation, Elvera worked as a nurses aide at the old hospital located behind the Court House and as a waitress at the Burke Hotel. She met Clinton Tuff Bauld at a dance in Herrick and they were married January 20, 1942 in ONeill, Nebraska. They started their life together on a farm one mile north of Herrick. After a few years they traded farms with Tuffs parents and relocated to the farm three miles north of Herrick where they farmed for years.
When their health no longer allowed them to farm, they made the decision to move to Parkview Manor in Burke, where they resided until their deaths. Tuff died in December of 2003. Elvera died on March 19, 2008 at the Denver Airport while on a return trip from visiting her daughter and son-in-law as well as her grandchildren. This was the same day that she lost her youngest daughter, Kathy Jo, in 1959.
Elvera was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tuff; one infant daughter, Kathy Jo; two brothers: Don and Dean and one sister, Florence Shorty.
Elvera is survived by her children David and wife Bernice of Herrick, SD; Cheryl and husband Neal Inglett of Reseda, CA; Nancy and husband Mark Benter of Burke, SD; Doug and wife Janet of Burke, SD; and Julie and husband Ronnie Johnson of Burke, SD; 20 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law: Nola Reber of Rapid City, SD; Shirley Bentz of Mesa, AZ; and Patricia Toots Havens of Washington; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Burial will be in the Herrick Cemetery, Herrick. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 PM, with a 7 PM prayer service, at the funeral home.
