Lena Elsie Walters was born November 24, 1927 on a farm near Colome, South Dakota to S.A. Sterling and Lena (Christensen) Sterling and she died April 28, 2012 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, South Dakota at the age of 84 years.

Elsie attended rural schools and graduated from Winner High School in 1947. She taught school for two years and worked at Ben Franklin in Winner.

Elsie was united in marriage to William Walters at the Winner Baptist Church on December 30, 1956. They adopted two children, Randy and Vickie. They were also foster parents for several years. She was a member of the Mary and Martha Society at the Lucas Baptist Church, and a member of the Union Baptist Church in Burke. She was involved with the Senior Citizens Center in Burke where she served on the Board of Directors for a number of years.

Elsie enjoyed embroidering dish towels and pillow slips. She shared these items with family and friends. She enjoyed baking cinnamon rolls, banana bread, brownies and cookies and shared these as well. Elsie was always willing to help others.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, William in 2004, her parents, six brothers and two sisters.

Elsie is survived by her daughter, Vickie and husband Greg of Sioux Falls, SD; her son, Randy of Billings, MT; her foster daughter, Brooke of Fargo, ND; her sister, Delores of Gregory, SD and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the Union Baptist Church in Burke. Burial will be in the Lucas Cemetery, Lucas, South Dakota.
