Edna Gertrude Carter was born October 16, 1914 in Tripp County, South Dakota to Oliver and Nellie (Arnold) Carter and passed away May 9th, 2008 at the Burke Community Hospital at the age of 93 years, 6 months and 7 days.

Edna grew up in the Carter, South Dakota area and married David Frey January 24, 1931 at Lakes Andes, South Dakota. To this union 4 daughters and 1 son was born. They spent the first years of their married life in the Lucas area and moved to Burke in 1950. Edna worked at various jobs in the Burke area and made many friends; she lived in her own home for 53 years then, due to failing health, she moved into Whispering Pines which became her home for the next five years. She enjoyed playing cards and visiting in a family atmosphere at Whispering Pines. Her highlight was when her grandkids and great-grandkids stopped by for a visit. They always kept her up on the latest events in their lives.

David and Ednas doors were always open to the friends of their children and grandchildren. It seems to be a gathering spot for all.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 52 years; two daughters: Violet Pistulka and Barbara Harris; five sisters: Ethel, Reva, Fern, Mildred and Dorothy and three brothers: Clifford, Emery and Alfred; a granddaughter, Shelli Frey; and two great-grandsons: Michael Pistulka and Timothy Humpal.

Edna leaves to mourn a son, Gayus of Herrick, SD; her daughters: Berniece (David) Bauld of Herrick, SD; Janet (Ted) Braun of Gregory, SD; a son-in-law, Mick (Evalina) Harris of Rapid City, SD; one daughter-in-law, Dixie Frey of Burke, SD; 16 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchild and 9 great-great grandchildren; and one sister-in-law Goldie Carter of Wessington Springs, SD. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 12, 2008 at 10:30 AM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Burke. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 8 PM, with a 7PM prayer service, at the funeral home
