Doug Deffenbaugh was born June 26, 1931 at Burke, South Dakota, the oldest of six children born to Fred and Ruth.

Doug"s family lived in Lynch, Nebraska for a short time before moving to Witten, South Dakota for railroad work. He went to school in Witten until the fourth grade, and then the family moved to Bonesteel, South Dakota for one year. They then moved to Herrick for two years before moving south of Burke. He graduated from Burke High School in 1951.

Doug enlisted in the Army in August of 1952 and served in the Korean War. In August of 1954, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant First Class.

Doug attended Barber College in Sioux City, Iowa in 1954. He continued to barber for the next 45 years, retiring in 1999. He also enjoyed being a substitute mail carrier, volunteer fireman, EMT and Mayor of Tripp, South Dakota.

Doug was united in marriage to Joyce Ness on December 24, 1988 at one of their favorite fishing holes, Lake Sheridan. Some of his hobbies included cooking, fishing, hunting, playing cards, desert golf and he enjoyed his grandchildren.

Doug passed away on September 6, 2012 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke a the age of 81 years. He is survived by his wife, Joyce of Burke, SD; his children: Mike and wife Jean of Sioux Falls, SD; Brad and wife Lisa of Honolulu, HI; Brenda and husband Tim Warnke of Fairfax, SD; a special daughter-in-law, Ruth of Yankton, SD; and two step-sons: Mark Ness and wife Julie of Era, TX and Ronnie Ness and wife Cheyenne of Rapid City, SD. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Denny and wife Dona of Burke, SD; two sisters: Donna and husband Dick James of Rapid City, SD and Diane and husband Mike Gunvordahl of Burke, SD; and special friends Gary and Donna Skalla of Burke, SD.

Doug was preceded in death by his son, Mark; his parents; two siblings: Dixie Frey and Darrell Deffenbaugh and a special niece, Shelli Frey.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 10:30 AM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Burke. Visitation will be Monday prior to the services at the funeral home.
