IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Donald Dwaine
Swift
May 24, 1931 – April 16, 2016
Donald Dwaine Swift was born at home on May 24, 1931, to Oral and Aletha (Stinton) Swift. Upon graduating from Burke High School in 1949, the next two years were spent helping his parents with the farming operation.
In 1952 Dwaine was drafted into the U.S. Army. After completing two years of service he returned to South Dakota and started training with the USDA. During this time he worked as a Chief Clerk in the Hughes-Stanley County office in Fort Pierre. During the training period, Dwaine was married to Avis Roggow on February 14, 1960. They were blessed with one son, David.
In 1961, they purchased a farm in the Lucas area where David and his family now reside. In addition to farming, Dwaine enjoyed raising livestock, and working at the Burke and Gregory sale barns. Dwaine served his community by serving on the hospital board for a number of years and frequently acting as chaplain for Memorial Day Services.
In 1980 Dwaine was chosen as County Executive Director of the Gregory County ASCS, in which he included a weekly radio update. He worked in the Burke office while continuing to farm until his retirement from ASCS in 1996.
After their retirements, he and Avis began a pumpkin patch, which David's children continue to operate. Avis, his wife of 43 years, passed away on November 8, 2003.
On June 16, 2005, Dwaine married Donna Lindgren of Pickstown, South Dakota. They enjoyed going to Florida, camping, grandchildren, and just being together. He was a very kind and loving husband. In his declining health he was so appreciative of Donna's at-home care.
Dwaine's commitment to the Lord was first and foremost in his life. He was known for his patient and gentle spirit. He served a number of years as Sunday school superintendent, teacher, and board member at the Lucas Baptist Church. Before his health failed he faithfully shared God's Word by filling in for pastors at area churches and at numerous funerals. Even during his final days he loved to share interesting stories and to tell a good joke.
Dwaine passed on to eternal life on April 16, 2016 at the Wagner Community Hospital after suffering for many years from Multiple Systems Atrophy (MSA). Dwaine was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Avis, brothers-in-law George Baney, Vilas Roggow, Stanley Roggow, Larry Roggow, and Hugh Townsend.
He leaves to mourn his wife Donna, his son David (Fawn), his grandchildren Michaela (Nathan) Johnson, Boaz, Esther, Judah, Bethany, Patience, Malachi, Nathan, Jeremiah, Moriah, Hosanna, and Isaac, great grandchild Tirzah, sisters Lois Baney and Ruth Ann (LeRoy) Anderson, several nieces and nephews, Donna's three daughters Linda (Ron) Paulson, Cindy (KayDon) Jons, Patty (Joel) Jons, and their families.
