Donald R. Schock was born November 11, 1927 at the family farm near Naper, Nebraska to William and Marie (Kahler) Schock and he died December 9, 2006 at home on the family farm at the age of 79 years and 28 days.
Don and his family lived on a farm in rural Burke, South Dakota. He attended grade school at the Lutz District #38 school and attended one year at Burke High School. They moved to the Schock farm near Naper in 1941. He graduated from Naper High School in 1946.
Donald married Dolores Higgins August 14, 1951 in Long Pine, Nebraska. To this union, there were three children: Robert, Daniel and Andrea. He served in the US Army from 1951 through 1953 as a construction engineer in the Korean Conflict. He was an active member of the Naper VFW Post #8256, serving as quarter master since 1979. He also belonged to the American Legion Post #220 in Herrick.
Don was a lifelong farmer and rancher, who lived on and owned the Schock Century Farm that was originally homesteaded in 1891, the farm with the big red barn. He also enjoyed carpentry work, doing many projects including building their house in 1972. He was semi-retired from farming and ranching. He liked to travel, hunt and later in life greatly enjoyed fishing. He was a loving and caring family man and a great friend to many.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, William Schock and Marie Schock Stanek; his sons, Daniel in infancy and Robert; and one brother-in-law, George Alexander.
Don is survived by his wife, Dolores; daughter and husband, Andrea and Joe Abbenhaus of Bloomfield, NE; daughter-in-law, Joan (Bruns) Schock of Adrian, MN; 7 grandchildren: Jenny, Arin, Ashley and Roland Schock and Tyler, Kylie and Eric Abbenhaus; 2 great-granddaughters: Heather and Brooklyn Schock; his sisters: Vivian Alexander of Kearney, NE; Neita and Wayne Andersen of Venice, FL; and Phyllis and Melvin Schrader of Lusk, WY; his step-father, Richard Stanek of Burke, SD; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at 10:30 AM at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Naper. Burial will be in the Baptist Cemetery, rural Naper. There will be a prayer service on Tuesday at 7:00 PM at the Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to both of the services at the church.
