Delores Jamison Connell was born December 19, 1933 at home in northern Rock County, Nebraska to Donald and Bernice (Cook) Jamison. She passed away December 15, 2015, at the Burke Community Memorial Hospital, Burke, South Dakota.
Delores graduated from Rock County High School in 1951 then attended Morningside College and the Methodist Hospital of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa. After passing her state boards, Delores received her Registered Nurse's license in the summer of 1954.
She married Robert (Bob) Connell, Jr. on June 5, 1954 in Newport, Nebraska. They made their home on a ranch in Keya Paha County across the Niobrara River from where she grew up. To this union two children were born, Janet and Donald. After both children began attending school, Delores had the desire to use her education by working part-time nights at the Burke Community Hospital as a registered nurse. In 1967, Bob and Delores built a home in Gregory, South Dakota. Delores began working full-time at the Gregory Community Hospital where she eventually became the Director of Nurses. During those years her children attended high school in Gregory and Bob drove daily to the ranch in Nebraska.
In 1972, Bob was involved in a farm accident in which he became a double amputee. Throughout that time, the subsequent rehabilitation, and adjustment to living with a disability, Delores faithfully remained with, assisted, supported and encouraged her husband and family. In 1982, Bob and Delores moved back to the ranch in Nebraska, and Delores returned to work at the Burke Hospital. She retired from nursing in 1999, after 46 years of working as a registered nurse. Bob and Delores continued to enjoy traveling, attending most of their children's and grandchildren's activities. Delores was an avid reader and enjoyed a variety of printed material, books, fiction and nonfiction, magazines and newspapers. In 2006, Bob and Delores moved to the Burke Senior Citizen Retirement Living Facility, and in February 2015, to the Haisch Haus assisted-living facility in Bonesteel, South Dakota.
