Delbert Dale Miller was born Feb 24, 1924 to Otto and Anna Miller in Hoskins, Nebraska. At the age of 7, he moved with his parents and 3 of his 6 siblings to a farm 5 miles north of Burke, South Dakota. He attended country school through 8th grade, then completed his high school education at Burke High School.
In 1941, upon graduating high school, Delbert held various jobs from traveling with the gain harvesting crews, laborer building the new hospital and the new Lutheran church, along with farming with his father. When WWII broke out, Delbert's older brother went into the army. Delbert was kept at home to farm with his parents. Upon his brother's return from Europe, Delbert's father informed the Draft Board that Delbert could now report for his Army duty.
Delbert served in the US Army during the occupation of Korea at the end of WW II. As sergeant he was tasked with taking his men out on marches in Korea. He was known for striding across the hills at a rapid pace which his team found challenging.
Upon return from Korea, Delbert and Lena were wed on June 19, 1949 in the Grace Lutheran Church. Together they farmed different locations north of Burke. This union brought into the world: Sandy, Diane and Clark.
Delbert was confirmed at the Grace Lutheran Church, Burke, SD. As an adult, he assisted with the building, remodeling and/or addition to the church. He also served on the Grace Lutheran Counsel including serving as treasurer for many years.
In 1972, Delbert, Lena and Clark moved from the farm into Burke purchasing Fiebelkorn/Mahrt Plumbing business which became Miller Plumbing remaining in the downtown location. Approximately 10 years later, they purchased the old railroad right of way, built a new plumbing shop and moved their business to 1101 Main Street.
In June 2010 Lena's health was failing and she entered a nursing home. April 2013, Delbert's life partner passed away.
In June 2016, Delbert's health failed and he entered an assisted living facility. In October 2017, he moved to a nursing home where he received care until his death.
