IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David Henry
Hutchison
August 27, 1969 – August 18, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Henry Hutchison, a devoted husband, proud father, cherished grandpa, loyal friend, and respected superintendent. David passed away surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of love, leadership, and much strength.
David was born on August 27, 1969 in Burke, SD to Jerry and Donna Hutchison. Throughout his childhood and adulthood he was well known throughout the Burke community and always enjoyed visiting. He graduated from Burke High School in 1987 and continued on to the University of South Dakota. He eventually transferred to Northern State University and received a business degree. He quickly realized being in the business world was not his passion and was influenced by his father in law, Randy Lyon, to pursue education at Black Hills State University. He student taught in Deubrook, SD and later took his first teaching job. He married the love of his life, Carmen, July 1, 1995 and had two beautiful daughters, Tayler and Gabby.
Throughout his life, David dedicated himself to the service of others — both in his professional career and at home. He began his teaching career in Chamberlain, SD. There he went to state two years in a row as an assistant coach to the boys basketball team. When his wife finished her student teaching, they both took a job in Wagner, SD. There he enjoyed being the head football coach and had great success on and off the field. During his time in Wagner, Dave went on to obtain his administrators degree through the University of South Dakota. He later accepted the junior high/high school principal job at Irene, SD. During his time there, he completed his specialists degree from the University of Sioux Falls and became the superintendent. He spent the last 25 years dedicating his time to the Irene-Wakonda School District, he led with integrity, compassion, and a steady hand, earning the admiration of colleagues and the respect of his community. His leadership left a lasting impact on those he worked with and the students he helped shape.
But David's proudest role was within his family. He was a constant source of support and unconditional love. His children and grandchildren knew him as someone who always encouraged their best self. His presence filled a room and his influence will echo in their lives for years to come.
Those who knew David will remember his genuine kindness and the way he made others feel seen and valued. He always strived to make someone's day by simple acts of kindness. He leaves behind a legacy not just in his professional achievements, but in the countless lives he touched.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. He is preceded in death by his father in law Randy Lyon, mother in law Leigh Lyon, maternal and paternal grandparents. He is survived by his wife, Carmen Hutchison, daughters, Tayler De Ruyter (Mike), Gabby Healy (Josh), father, Jerry Hutchison, mother, Donna Hutchison, his two brothers Jeff and Brad and their families, his cherished grandchildren, Bryar, Briggs, Archie, and Sutton. Dave would want us all to live by his words "You have to make the best of it, life's too short to just not."
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025 beginning at 5:00 PM at the VFW in Burke. Food and drinks will be provided and all are welcome.
