Clifford Alvin Chasing Hawk, Sr was born November 22, 1931, to Richard Chasing Hawk, Sr and Hazel (Thomas) Chasing Hawk in St. Charles, South Dakota. He attended country school in the community of Milks Camp. As a boy, he helped out on the farm that he was raised on and was devoted to his Catholic faith, being an altar boy and server within the church. He enlisted in the Air Force in early 1950s and was stationed at Schilling Air Force Base in Salina, Kansas, home to the 310th Strategic Bombardment Wing ( also designated the 310th Strategic Aerospace Wing) flying B-47s and the 22d Strategic Aerospace Division. He was also stationed overseas in Keflavik, Iceland. After being in the military, Clifford returned home and worked in Winner, South Dakota and Hasting, Nebraska. He met and married Velma Roubideaux in 1970 and to this union, they were blessed with seven children; Brenda, Russell, Clifford Jr Speedy, Glenford, Dean, Todd and Beverly.
He loved watching his boys play sports, from high school to the present day; you could always find Clifford cheering at the games. He was the father of the Mad Dogs Softball Team, if you followed them to a game, Clifford and Velma would have a trunk full of food and pop. He was very proud of his childrens athletic abilities and having two homecoming kings, Cliff Jr. in 1989 & Todd in 1996. He was known for making pannie cakes for his boys every Sunday morning. On July 24, 2010 he was honored to be part of displaying his dads flag at the Milks Camp Community Powwow, celebrating his dads 100th birthday. He was also proud to be honored by his grandson Barron Andrews. Barron honored him by awarding MVP at the Milks Camp Fast Pitch Tournament for the past three years. He was known by many to hit homeruns over the Ponca Bridge when he played with the Ponca 49ers.
Clifford was a hard working man. He worked at Varner Beals every summer where he helped extract honey and did various jobs. He was very talented with his hands and could fix just about anything around the house. In the winter you could find him scooping snow and in the summer you could find him mowing and picking up around the yard. He worked from sun up to sun down. He was a wrestling fanatic. If you were looking for him on Monday or Thursday evenings, you would find him in his living room cheering on his favorite wrestlers. He would even miss the Mad Dogs Monday night games to watch WWE Wrestling. He loved the visits of his grandchildren, always holding them each chance he got. He had a sense of humor and often could be heard joking and dancing with his sisters-in-law! He was a very devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed by all of those that shared his life.
