Cheryl Jean Bendig was born November 10, 1950 at the Gregory Hospital in Gregory, South Dakota to Alvin and Donna (Schonebaum) Bendig and she died January 19, 2018 at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell, South Dakota at the age of 67 years.

When Cheryl was one day old she suffered a stroke, which resulted in her being handicapped.  She spend her first seven years at home, where she enjoyed playing in the sandbox, being outside near the flowers and spending time with her grandparents.

Cheryl moved to the Healthcare Center in Redfield, South Dakota and later to the Custer Children's Home.  There she enjoyed sleigh rides, camping, musical events and the stock show.  It was here that they began teaching her some basic life necessities.  She had surgery to correct her left leg in order to help her walk, but the surgery was not successful.

Cheryl moved to Life Quest in Mitchell in 1996.  Here she enjoyed car rides, boat rides, she attended basketball games and even attended the Harlem Globetrotters.  In 2016 they discovered broke vertebrate in her neck and she had surgery.  She was transferred to Firesteel Healthcare following her return to Mitchell.  She remained here until her death.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her grandparents.  She is survived by her parents; two brothers: Brent of Bonesteel, SD and Craig of Fremont, NE; her aunts: Phyllis Schonebaum and Vivian Hoy; her uncle Kenneth Schonebaum; two nieces and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke.  Burial will be in the Rosebud Cemetery, Bonesteel.  Visitation will be Thursday prior to the services at the funeral home.
