Carol Perlenfein was born March 18, 1955 in Omaha, NE to Dean Russell and Betty Mae (Petersen) Sabalka. She passed away on January 1, 2014 at the Lake Andes Health Care Center at the age of 58 years after a long illness.
Carol spent most of her youth in Fremont NE. where she went to school at the Lutheran Church school there. In 1969 she and her family moved to Bonesteel, SD where her parents bought the Bonesteel Enterprise Newspaper from Joe and Gertie Dvorak. Carol finished most of her schooling at Bonesteel High School and worked at the newspaper for her parents. In 1980 she purchased the newspaper from her mom and dad and continued the business until 1996 when her health deteriorated enough that she no longer could operate the printing equipment. The newspaper did keep her very busy but did enjoy camping, some fishing and trips to see the grandkids in the later years.
On December 3, 1971 Carol married David Perlenfein in Fairfax, SD and to this union a daughter Amy, and a son Scott were born. The kids spent a lot of time at the newspaper as they grew older and helped with getting it out each week.
In April 2007 Carol's health was such that she could no longer be cared for at home so she became a resident at the Lake Andes Health Care Center, Lake Andes, SD. There, almost 7 years passed while she received the best of care from the staff as if she was a member of their own family.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Grandparents, Carl Petersen, and Jacob and Lois Sabalka.
Carol is survived by her husband, children Amy Perlenfein of Balaton, MN, and Scott Perlenfein of Brookings, SD, 11 grandchildren, grandmother, Bernice Petersen of Bridgewater, SD, sisters: Rita (Ivan) Umberger, Fairfax, SD, Pam Wells of Isanti, MN, Shirley (Warren) Frederickson of Hudson, SD, brother Dean Sabalka of Bonesteel, SD as well as several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
