Carl George Horst, 90, passed away January 30, 2017 at the Butte Senior Living Home in Butte, Nebraska.   Funeral services will be Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Johns Lutheran church in Fairfax, South Dakota.  Burial will be in the Herrick cemetery, Herrick, South Dakota with military rites.

Carl was born in Herrick on August 21, 1926.  He was the 12th child of John and Bertha Horst.  Carl attended school in Herrick for 12 years graduating in 1944. He was drafted in the U.S. Army in November of 1944. His Honorable Discharge was in 1946. He received various decorations and citations while serving his country.   He received his Bachelor of Science in Education Degree from Southern State College in Springfield, South Dakota. He taught in several schools in Nebraska and South Dakota before receiving his Master of Arts Degree in 1954 from the University of Wyoming.

He began teaching at Chadron State College in 1961 and remained there until his retirement in 1989.  During his time at CSC the enrollment tripled and the number of faculty quadrupled.  He sponsored several organizations and was known as an outstanding accounting professor.   It was while teaching at Chadron State College that Carl met Mary Louise Martin.  They were married in 1973.  They danced and traveled their way through many countries.

His greatest love was spending time with family enjoying a good game of cards.  Other hobbies included gardening, jewelry making, and wood working.  Carl was a loving and caring son and brother.  He took care of his mother for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings. He leaves to mourn many nieces and nephews.  Grateful for having shared his life is his adopted family, Perry and Verona Beguin, 2 grandchildren, Shawn Beguin and Tina VanKley (Nick) and 2 great granddaughters, Carmen and Ariyana Beguin.
