Obituary

Byron Lee Kelso was born on March 21, 1937 in Burke, South Dakota to Arthur (Doc) and Alma (Larson) Kelso. Byron passed away at the age of 71 years, 8 months and 7 days on Sunday, December 14, 2008 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke.
Byron was raised in Burke and attended the Burke School System, graduating in 1955. Following graduation he attended the School Of Mines in Rapid City, South Dakota for two years, returning to Burke in 1957 to pursue a career in law enforcement.
Byron married Linda Buryanek in 1955 and to this union two children, Penny Lee and Holly Lin, were born.
After serving as a deputy sheriff in Gregory County under Sheriff Lyle Oliver, Byron joined the South Dakota Highway Patrol in the early 60's. He later joined the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Department under Barny Boes.
In the late 60's Byron moved his family to Deadwood, South Dakota and was employed as a contract miner in the Homestake Gold Mine. Byron loved the Black Hills and enjoyed looking for old mines with his brother-in-law Lawrence Kracht and his two nephews Larry and Lonnie.
In the early 70's Byron and Linda and the girls returned to Burke where Byron was employed as Chief of Police for the City of Burke for several years. In 1983, Byron's wife Linda passed away from cancer. Byron drove truck for several years before moving to Colorado where he worked for a RV Dealership as maintenance foreman. In the early 90's Byron was reacquainted with an old friend Jacque Juracek and they spent the next 16 years together, returning to Burke after Byron's retirement, to be close to family and friends. Jacque passed away in May of 2008.
Byron was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Alma Kelso, his step mother Leota (Chambers) Kelso, his wife Linda, his daughter Penny and special friend Jacque. Byron is survived by his daughter Holly and children of California, his brothers Grant of Missouri, and Larry of Sioux Falls, his sister Linda of California, his son in law Joe Schonebaum and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins and his special Aunt Emily Anhorn, of Michigan.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Burial will be at a later date.
