Betty Lou Lamp, age 89, died Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Tieszen Memorial Home in Marion, SD.
Betty was born on August 5, 1936, in Harrison, SD to Leendert and Jennie Vanden Berge. She was baptized in the First Reformed Church of Harrison and attended school in Douglas County. Betty eventually moved to Mitchell, SD to work as a nurse’s aid at Methodist Hospital before moving to continue the same work at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. On September 16, 1960, Betty married Leroy Lamp in Flandreau, SD. The couple later welcomed two children LeAnn and Mark during the years of Leroy’s post-secondary education in Brookings, SD. The family moved to Hamlin County after Leroy graduated where he worked as an assistant county agent. In 1968, they moved to Burke, SD where Betty ran an in-home daycare and was a 4-H leader for several years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Burke. Betty was known for her hardworking nature, cross stitched tea towel sets, and her love for gardening, crosswords, and jigsaw puzzles.
The family is thankful for the great care and nurturing she received at the Haisch Haus Assisted Living facility in Bonesteel, SD and Tieszen Memorial Home in Marion.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leroy, parents, brothers Arvin, Glen, Kenneth, and Calvin, and sister Eileen Nelson.
She is survived by her daughter LeAnn (Ross) Lothrop of Canton, SD; son Mark (Brenda) Lamp of Burke, SD; grandchildren, LaDana (Marshall) Spreckels of Winner, SD; Lacey Lamp of Winner, SD; Matthew (Lexi) Lamp of Burke, SD; Lindsey Lothrop, Alyssa Lothrop, and Aryca Lothrop all of Sioux Falls, SD, Morgan Lothrop of Canton, SD; and eight great-grandchildren. She is survived by her youngest sister Ruby Lindeman of Selby, SD.
A private interment will take place at Graceland Cemetery in Burke, SD at a later date.
