Belva Jean (Stevicks) Kahler was born January 27th, 1935 to Lloyd and Eva (Cotter) Stevicks. She passed away on June 24th, 2015 at her home in Burke, SD at the age of 80. Belva attended Burke Schools, where she graduated in 1953. She became a farmer's wife when she married Delbert "Pete" Kahler on March 14, 1955. They lived on the Zorba Ranch south of Herrick for 1 ½ years. Then they moved to her parent's farm in Lucas, SD. Belva worked for Kallanders Market for approximately 8 years. In 1962, she started working for Klufa's Grocery and worked there until 1984. Pete and Belva moved into Burke in 1973. They sold their farm in Lucas in 1996. In 1980, Belva and her mother Eva, started a craft shop in Eva's home. In 1987, Belva's dad, Lloyd was hospitalized, so Eva came to live with Pete and Belva in their home. Belva started her craft shop up again along with her mother in the fall of 1988. This business was run out of her basement; this was known by many as the "Craft Basket". So many hours and much talent were put into each item Belva made. Belva was President of the VFW Auxiliary Post #9950 in 1980; she was also the President of The Burke Rummage Center (Hospital Auxiliary). Her many bowling trophies were a sign to all that bowling was a big part of her and Pete's lives as well. "Bingo Belva" is what some called her due to her love and luck for bingo. Belva was blessed to able to spend her last days on earth in her own home. This was made possible because of special family members who became a special part of both Pete and Belva's lives a few years back. These members were: Linda and Byrain, Brittany and Kurtis, Brandon, Megan, Michael, and last but not least, the newest little member in Belva's life that made her smile, great-nephew Chason Levi, or as Belva called him "Buckwheat." Belva was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert "Pete" Kahler; her parents, Lloyd and Eva (Cotter) Stevicks; her aunt and uncle, Joe and Cecil (Cotter) Morin. She is survived by brothers-in-law, Kenneth (Deanna) Kahler of Burke, SD; Lawrence (Gloria) Rolf of Johnstown, CO; sister-in-law Valera Lanz of Gregory, SD; and special caregiver and friend Deb Leibel,as well as several other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 29, 2015 at 10:30 AM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Burke. Visitation will be Monday prior to the services at the funeral home.
