IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arthur Raymond
Gealow
June 29, 1946 – September 14, 2021
Arthur Raymond Gealow, 75, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away on Tuesday, September 14, at Ava's Hospice House after suffering a series of strokes. He was born on June 29, 1946 to Merlin and Sereta Gealow.
Art was raised in Lucas, SD on the family farm where he worked throughout his youth and teenage years. In his early 20's, Art was drafted and sent to serve in the Vietnam War. During his service, Art was injured after the back wheels of his truck hit a land mine, causing permanent damage to his ears. He considered himself blessed, however, as many of his personal friends lost their lives during their service. For this, he was awarded the Purple Heart. Art took great pride in serving his Country, and spent many years volunteering at the VA Hospital, prior to his health declining due to his exposure to agent orange. He struggled with ongoing physical and mental health issues due to this exposure, and the trauma he experienced during his service.
In 2009, Art and Caren began spending time with one another. They particularly enjoyed going out to the VFW and American Legion to enjoy evenings of dancing, and fell in love. They were united in marriage on September 22, 2013, in the presence of their family. Shortly after this time, Art's health began to decline and Caren lovingly cared for him throughout the years.
Art was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW, where he and Caren frequently enjoyed going out and dancing, prior to his physical and mental health decline. Art was an avid reader and enjoyed spending his time reading countless Western books. He likely read every one the library owns! He also enjoyed watching Western classics on TV and DVD. Art liked to keep to himself in his latter years, but enjoyed the presence of his family, including his wife, son and daughter-in-law, and his three grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory survived are: His wife, Caren (Cady) Gealow, and her son and daughter-in-law, John and Sara Cady, his grandchildren: Kyli (14), Jackson (7), and Kenzi (4) Cady, all of Valley Springs, SD; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Merlin Gealow, his mother, Sereta Gealow, 2 brothers: Gary and Keith Gealow, his grandparents, a nephew, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, September 20, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Burial will be in the Lucas Cemetery of Lucas. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke.
