IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Amanda Leona
Schochenmaier
March 1, 1915 – March 15, 2019
Amanda Leona Camin Schochenmaier was born March 1, 1915 at the family farm in Naper, Nebraska. She was the oldest of eight children born to John and Emma (Bettcher) Camin.
As a young girl, Amanda and her siblings walked to a country school. German was the only language Amanda knew at that time. She learned to speak English after attending school. Her favorite class was penmanship.
Being the oldest child, Amanda became her dad's "hired man". She cleaned the chicken house, raked hay, and shocked grain along with many other farm chores.
When Amanda was 17 years old, she began working outside the home to earn her own money. While working for Fred and Lillie Thoene, she met one of the hired men who also worked there.
On December 12, 1939, she and Henry Schochenmaier were married at the Lutheran Church in Naper. It was a small afternoon ceremony. Her sister, Edna and Herman Schochenmaier were their attendants.
Hank and Amanda made their home on a farm west of St. Charles for 8 years. During this time their son, Marvin was born. In 1949, they moved to the farm west of Bonesteel where they resided for 28 years. The birth of their daughter, Donna, completed the family. In 1977, Hank and Amanda retired and moved to Bonesteel. Hank passed away in 1989.
When Amanda was 92, she moved to the TLC Assisted Living Facility in Burke, where she resided for the last 12 years.
In her younger years, she loved to dance, play cards, and was well-known for her dill pickles and letter writing. You didn't just receive a card, there was always a 2-page, double-sided letter along with the card. Hank and Amanda both enjoyed company. Their home was often visited by nieces, nephews, and cousins. The visitors never left until they had a "bite to eat". Amanda was a kind, loving, and thoughtful person.
Amanda is survived by her children, Marvin (Caroline) of Spencer, NE and Donna (Gary) Skalla of Burke, SD; five grandchildren, Tricia (Bryan) Hipke and Joe (Kelsey) Schochenmaier, Emily (Clinton) Benter, Brad (Heather) Skalla, and Jeff Skalla; thirteen great-grandchildren, Samantha, Andrea, Bo, and Katelyn Hipke, Gage and Sofie Schochenmaier, Sydney, Haley, and Reed Benter, Sophee, Drayke, Beckett, and Kashe Skalla; her siblings, Pauline (Marvin) Stoltenberg of Washington and Ruth Compton and Howard Camin of California; in-laws Aldrew and Margie Schochenmaier, Lila Schochenmaier, Anna Marie Cahoy, Doris Camin, Phyllis Camin, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hank, her parents, John and Emma Camin, her sisters Edna Aylin and Delma Correa, and brothers Alfred Camin and Dennis Camin.
