Obituary

Alvin Jons, 100, of Bonesteel, SD went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. At Alvin's request a private family graveside service was held Friday, July 18, 2025 at the Rosebud Cemetery in Bonesteel, SD.

Alvin was born to Emil and Lydia (Schroeder) Jons on September 5, 1924 at the family farm near Bonesteel, SD. He attended Pleasant Valley country school and later Bonesteel High School, graduating in 1942. He loved playing basketball and was an outstanding player on the high school team.  He farmed with his father after high school for many years before marrying Verna Nordquist on August 5, 1952.  The couple then moved to their own farm property where they farmed and ran a dairy for many years. Later on, his son Joel and wife Patty joined Alvin and Verna in operating the farm and dairy. He was most at home on a tractor and really enjoyed cutting hay.

Alvin gave his life to Christ at a young age at the Bonesteel Assembly of God Church and held strong to his faith in Jesus his entire life. He sang and played the trombone from a young age, and he played in church orchestras and at revival services for many years. His mother Lydia taught him to sing harmony with his sisters where they sang together in the Bonesteel church while growing up. He loved and sang gospel music with the Butte Full Gospel Reporters Quartet for 39 years which was a great joy in his life. Alvin was also an exceptional whistler and entertained at various venues with his whistling and singing. His wife Verna often accompanied him on the piano. Their home was always full of music.

Alvin leaves behind a legacy of faith, love of family, hard work, humor and generosity that will forever be remembered by those who knew him. He loved to laugh and enjoyed sharing jokes and was a great storyteller.

Left to cherish his memory; daughters Jonelle (Roger) Wendt of Kearney, NE; Debra (Bobby) Lawler of Carrollton, TX; son Joel (Patty) Jons of Bonesteel, SD; brother Loren (Bud) Jons of Bonesteel, SD, 6 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Alvin was preceded in death by his wife: Verna; sisters: Alice, Ardeth, Arleta; brother: Dennis; and great-granddaughter, Lila Mae.
