Alvin Frank Bendig was born April 17, 1925 near Naper, Nebraska to Adolph and Viola (Stoltenberg) Bendig and he died January 7, 2021 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 95 years.

Alvin grew up on the family farm near Bonesteel, South Dakota.  He attended Pleasant Valley Country School and Graduated from Bonesteel High School in 1943.  Following graduation he worked with his father on the family farm before enlisting in the Army in 1945.  He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan until his discharge in 1947.  Upon his return he continued farming with dad.

He was united in marriage to Donna Schonebaum on October 25, 1947 and to this union three children were born: Brent, Craig and Cheryl.  While farming, they also raised cattle, hogs and chickens.

Alvin loved welding, and did so for many of the neighbors.  He served on the township board and ran the maintainer for them.  In his retirement years, he spent many hours gardening.  Alvin received the South Dakota World War II Veterans Award in January of 2018.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Cheryl; his sisters Evelyn and Vivian as well as his brothers-in-law.

Alvin is survived by his wife of 73 years, Donna; his sons,  Brent and Craig; his granddaughters Candice and Jerri and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at 1:30 PM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke.  Burial will be in the Rosebud Cemetery in Bonesteel.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Funeral Home.
