Adeline Vira Beckerwas born May 20, 1920, the eighth of nine children, to William and Alvina (Romm) Steppat on a farm near Carlock, South Dakota. She died February 21, 2006 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, South Dakota at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 1 day.
Adeline attended school through the eighth grade. She worked on the family farm and then worked at a grocery store in Gregory, South Dakota. It was there that she met Rudolph Becker and they were married on September 18, 1945. they then went on a four month long honeymoon. They worked their way out to Portland, Oregon and back, seeing three of her sisters along the way. They settled in Mitchell, South Dakota where she worked in produce and later at a cleaners. They moved to a farm northwest of Naper, Nebraska, where they lived for 48 years. They retired and moved into Burke in 1996.
Adeline enjoyed farm life, especially gardening and canning for her husband and three children. She loved her family, church and friends. She would always bring a cake to a function when it was needed. She enjoyed VFW Bingo, hardly ever missed and usually won!!
Adeline was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and the LWML in Jamison, Nebraska. She was also a member of the Burke Post # 9950 VFW Auxiliary where she had served as president for a year and also held the office of District president for one year. She held the office of Hospital Chairman for many years and currently held the position of guard at the time of her death.
Adeline was preceded in death by her parents and six sisters: Ola Knittel, Ella Delaney, Laura Harrison, Margaret Trupp, Ethel Keiser and Leona Steppat.
Adeline is survived by her husband, Rudolph of Burke, SD; her daughters: Glenna and husband Richard Burns of Sioux Falls, SD; Janet Vargas of Sioux Falls, SD; and Betsy and husband Gary Raymer of Stuart, NE; three grandsons: Anthony Burns, Brian Raymer and Cory Raymer; three granddaughters: Elizabeth Burns, Alana Vargas and Jessica Raymer; one brother, Fred Steppat of Gregory, SD; one sister, Lois and husband Jay Warden of Portland, OR; 2 sisters-in-law: Opal and husband Ray McFayden of Gregory, SD and Mavis and husband Tony Hambek of Herrick, SD.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2006 at 10:30 AM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Burke. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 8 PM, with a 7 PM prayer service, at the funeral home.
